During the off-season, Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish signed with the Texas Rangers with a contract worth $56 million over the next six years. He is just one of dozens of Japanese players to reach the majors and attract the attention of teams all over Major League Baseball. The sport in Japan is a way of life, much like it is for many fans in American and the Caribbean, but the MLB has capitalized on the strong fandom of the Japanese in recent years.
This Major League season will open halfway around the world, in Japan. The 2-game series between the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics marks the fourth time opening day has taken place across the Pacific.
